Hosta's with their beautifully textured foliage adds extra lush to your landscape. Shade Tolerant!
2 Gallon Hosta
- Hostas are low-maintenance, shade-loving perennials that thrive in USDA Zones 3-9, requiring moist, well-drained soil and dappled to full shade. Key care includes regular watering (about 1 inch per week) and protection from pests like slugs and deer. They thrive with compost top-dressing and minimal, if any, fertilizer.
-
Key Hosta Care Tips:
- Light: While they prefer partial to full shade, some varieties (especially lighter or yellow-leafed ones) can tolerate more sun, whereas blue-leafed varieties require more shade to prevent waxy coating damage.
- Watering: Consistently moist soil is crucial. Water at least once a week, and up to twice in hotter weather. Deep, infrequent watering is better than shallow, frequent watering.
- Soil & Planting: They prefer rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Plant in spring or early fall.
- Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of compost in spring as they emerge.
- Maintenance:
- Deadheading: Remove flower stalks after blooming to prevent seed production and focus energy back into foliage and roots.
- Division: Divide plants in early spring every few years to keep them healthy, especially if they become too crowded.
- Cleanup: Remove dead leaves in late fall or early spring to reduce pests and diseases.
-
Pest Control: Use slug baits, copper tape, or encourage natural predators to protect leaves from damage.
