Pick your color.
3 Gallon Hydrangea
- Hydrangeas thrive in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with partial shade (morning sun, afternoon shade) and consistent moisture. Water deeply 2–3 times per week, aiming for the base of the plant. Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring and prune based on whether they bloom on old or new wood
-
Pruning Guidelines
- Old Wood (Bloom early summer): Includes Bigleaf (H. macrophylla), Mountain, and Oakleaf (H. quercifolia). Prune immediately after flowering in summer.
- New Wood (Bloom late summer): Includes Panicle (H. paniculata) and Smooth (H. arborescens). Prune in early spring.
- Rebloomers: Treat as old-wood hydrangeas, avoiding heavy spring pruning.
Soil pH and Color- Blue Flowers: Requires acidic soil (pH 5.5 or lower). Add aluminum sulfate or soil acidifier.
- Pink Flowers: Requires alkaline soil (pH 6.5 or higher). Add garden lime.
Winter Protection- In colder climates, protect shrubs by surrounding them with wire fencing filled with leaves or mulch, and cover with burlap.
